Karen has always had an interest in and collection of primitive pottery.
While living for 9 years in the Marshall Islands at the Kwajalein Missile
Test Range, Karen met Yong Rhee, the Korean potter, who became her mentor
and teacher. As Karen developed her wheel-throwing technique, she discovered
a particular affinity for useful pottery pieces that speak of nature and
its colors.
Karen and her husband Cliff have been married 40 years and have two sons.
In addition to Micronesia & Florida, they lived on Wake Island in the
Central Pacific, where Typhoon Sarah’s 200 mph winds pulverized the island,
and destroyed their home. They also lived on St. Thomas in the U.S.
Virgin Islands and visited many islands throughout the Caribbean. Their
extensive travels have influenced Karen’s pottery and include Hawaii, the
South Pacific, Bali, Indonesia, Borneo, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore,
Japan, Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
Karen uses only food-safe glazes. The pieces are oven, dishwasher
and microwave-safe. She says: “I enjoy using a collection
of tiny vases as a dinner centerpiece and serving food in varied shapes and
colors of bowls. I love the warmth of the clay and bringing it to life.”
Karen’s pottery has been exhibited at GardensArt in Palm Beach Gardens, Art
Around the World Gallery in W. Palm Beach, the League of Florida Craftsmen
in Hobe Sound, and at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Ft. Pierce.
“Pottery is my process for overcoming perfectionism. The clay is my
teacher of infinite lessons in patience.”
